On April 3rd 1821, Spetses entered the Greek Revolution. At dawn, the people of Spetses, ripped the Turkish emblems, from the headquarters in Dapia port. Every year Spetsiots pay respect to their ancestors, representing that day. Below are photos taken from today’s celebrations at Dapia Port.
“The boat of Armata is almost ready! Spetses has a history of boat building and the Armata Festival is proof that the tradition still holds strong. Every year local craftsmen carefully construct an effigy of the Ottoman battleship which was torched by the islanders in 1822. The artisans of Spetses have pride not only in their dramatic history but also in their artisanal skills. This year’s boat is made by Takis Boufis!”
